What is a Presbyterian?

• Our church is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA). We share with other congregations a common theology (based on historic creeds and confessions) and polity (political system). The word “presbyterian” has its root in the word “presbyter” - or Elder.

How does your church work? (Who is in charge, anyway?)

• We elect Elders (presbyters) to serve as leaders for a three year term. These individuals are the Session, and they represent the congregation and vote on many different matters. The congregation also meets at least annually to receive reports, to elect new Elders and to vote on those items the Session cannot vote on.

• If this looks familiar, the US government follows a similar pattern. Rev. John Witherspoon was the only clergy member to sign the Declaration of Independence and he was Presbyterian!
